The weekend
meeting was the final race of the 2002 championship. The Saturday morning
was spent setting the bike up. We had a small problem with rear tyre grip
exiting the faster corners. This was caused by too little weight on the rear
tyre, so we lowered the rear ride height, adjusted the pre-load and made a
small adjustment to the damping. This improved the drive out of corners, at
the expense of slowing the steering a little. Which in turn made the bike
harder to muscle around the twistier sections of the circuit. But the set
up of the R1 is always a compromise, aimed at allowing the riders to get good
lap times throughout the 6 hour race.
Our qualifying position was not as high as we would have hoped, but considering
we were using tyres that had already done over 5 hours of track time we knew
it would be difficult to qualify in the top half.
Race day started at 9 O'clock with a 1/2 hour free practice. Both Shelley
and Mike went out for a few laps each to check the bike over and get themselves
"in gear."
As shown in the summary below the race went without any major problems. We
finished 20th overall and 7th in class.
| Time | Position | Notes (Excuses) |
| Qualifying | 27 | Mike was fastest setting a time of 01:05:910 |
| 1 Hour | 17 | Mike kept up a good pace for the first session |
| 2 Hours | 16 | Shaun picked up another place, however his progress was hampered because the pace car was out for over 15 minutes of the session. |
| 3 Hours | 24 | Shelley rode a steady session, without incident. |
| 4 Hours | 24 | The pit stop from Shelley to Mike went very well, but unluckily the pace car went out during the stop. Mike them had to wait almost 2 minutes at the end of the pit lane before he was allowed to rejoin the race. |
| 5 Hours | 21 | Shaun regains some places, although the rear tyre is now very warn and causing the bike to slid a lot particularly out of right hand corners. |
| Finish | 20 | Shelley rides well for the last session picking up another place. |
As always
the pit crew and timers supported the riders well, allowing them to get on
with the racing without having to deal with anything else. Thanks again to
all our helpers, sponsors and supports, without their help, time and enthusiasm
we could not be able to race.
The whole team would also like to thank all at KRC for running such a competitive,
yet friendly, championship.
The team is looking forward to next season.
The Snetterton
8 hour race is always that bit harder on the bike and riders, but this year
was even more difficult. The weather was to play a big part in the results
for all the teams, not least Coyote Racing. Over night and for all but the
last hour of the race it kept drizzling on and off which always makes the
grip levels hard to judge. But add to this that there had been two days of
classic car racing, dropping oil all over the track, the days before the race
made the track treacherous.
Shaun and Shelley did their qualifying runs, both putting in steady times.
But unfortunately the conditions caught Mike out. He lost the front end going
into the first corner. He was OK but the bike suffered damage to the foot
rest hanger, fairing, handle bar and steering damper. Once the bike had been
recovered the pit crew quickly swarmed around the bike and started on the
repairs. Although the team carry a good supply of spares we did not have a
handle bar clamp, so Shelley and Judith went on the scrounge. Another team
were kind enough to lend us the part so we could race.
By the time the repairs were finished and the bike re-scrutinised the race
had already started. But luckily for us, but not so for the teams involved,
there was a accident at the start of the race so the pace car went out straight
away. Thus although we started 15 minutes after everyone else we only lost
6 laps, so things could have been worse!
Mike did the first season followed by Shaun then Shelley. Throughout the race
the conditions were continually changing which caught out a lot of teams.
Thankfully all three Coyote riders kept a level head and a steady pace and
the team gradually regained positions.

| Qualifying | 39 | Mike crashes in qualifying |
| 1 Hour | 26 | After starting 15 minutes after all the other teams Mike rides well to claw back places. |
| 2 Hours | 17 | Shaun pulls back even more places. |
| 3 Hours | 25 | Shelley had two unplanned pit stops because of a mechanical noise. The engine oil was topped up and all was then OK. It is likely the bike lost some oil in the crash and in the rush to get the bike out it was not checked. |
| 4 Hours | 29 | |
| 5 Hours | 26 | |
| 6 Hours | 21 | Shaun gains 5 places. |
| 7 Hours | 18 | Shelley rides an extended season to cut out a pit stop and gains more positions. |
| Final Position | 17 | Mike completes the last season, in drying conditions and brings the bike home in 17th overall, out of 47 starters and 7th in class. |
This is Coyote Racing's best result to date. Finishing 17th overall and 7th in class was only possible because of great team work. Once again the riders would like to thank all the pit crew and helpers. They proved again that they are the "slickest pit crew in the championship."

This weekend
was to be the first of two visits to Pembrey this season. Saturday 25 May
was un-timed practice in the morning followed by qualifying in the afternoon.
As usual with Pembrey it is either raining or about to rain! Luckily the rain
skirted around the hills surrounding the track and left us alone until mid-afternoon.
Saturday Practice and Qualifying;
The aim of the practice was to get the suspension and gearing set up for the
circuit. Then run a fuel consumption test, to make sure we could run over
60 minutes between fuel stops. The practice went well and a good bike set
up was found for the qualifying and race.
At the start of qualifying the sky looked like it was about to rain any second.
So as Mike was fastest in practice he was sent out first to qualify. We suspected
this would be the only dry season. Mike put in several fast laps, the best
of which was 1:05:02, which put us 21, out of 44, on the grid for the
race. Shaun and Shelley also put in good qualifying times, but under deteriorating
conditions were unable to better Mike's time.
Straight after the end of qualifying the heavens opened, turning the track
and paddock into a river. This made the traditional Coyote Racing pre-race
BBQ rather difficult! The BBQ was set up in Mike's caravan awning, which would
have been OK with the sides, of the awning open. But the rain was so heavy
there was a river flowing through the awning! After a burger etc. we decided
retiring the the warm of the bar was the best bet.
Sunday (Race);
In a change of our normal race order Mike started the race. After only a couple
of worm up laps he was consistently lapping in 1 minute 5 seconds. This moved
us up to 12th place after the first hour. He pitted after 65 minutes
and handed over the Shaun. By this time, although it was not raining, the
hair pin at the end of the straight was flooding, because of the previous
nights rain. This made the corner torturous, particularly on dry tyres! Shaun
was lapping at 1 minute 8 seconds, but the hair pin was gradually turning
into a river, and it was impossible to lean the bike over to get round it.
After about 1 1/2 hours of the race, and a couple of crashes, the organisers
suspended the race, so the water could be cleared. They used the circuit fire
engine to suck up all the water, but this took about 1/2 hour. Shaun then
finished his session and handed over to Shelley. Shelley completed a good
session without incident and handed the bike back over to Mike.
Again Mike was flying, constantly lapping in low 1 minute 5 seconds and setting
the best lap for the team of 1:04:79. But during this session the race
was suspended , for 15 minutes, because the hair pin flooded again. When Mike
returned from this session to hand over to Shelley it was clear how hard he
had been pushing the bike. The fairing on the right hand side and the engine
casing on the left were both scraped because Mike was leaning the bike over
so far!
Because of the shortened race it had been calculated that Shelley and Shaun
could complete the final 75 minutes of the race without the need to refuel,
thus saving vital seconds. Shelley set out and within a few laps was consistently
breaking her own personal best lap. In this session she achieved a best of
1:10:72, and much to her pleasure, overtook Mike Oldknow, who raced
with Coyote last season and now races or Road Runner Racing. With about 40
minutes of the race left Shelley handed over to Shaun for the last session.
For the first time all day Shaun had a completely dry track to race on. He
was immediately lapping in 1 minute 7 seconds and he set is personal fastest
lap, on the R1, of 1:06:37 on the fourth from last lap. Shaun crossed
the line to finish 7th in class and 20th overall, from 44 starters.

| Qualifying | 21 | Mike sets the teams fastest qualifying lap |
| 1 Hour | 12 | Mike gets the team upto 12th |
| 2 Hours | 11 | Shaun gains another place |
| 3 Hours | 16 | |
| 4 Hours | 20 | Shelley completes a good session |
| 5 Hours | 20 | |
| Final Position | 20 | Shaun takes the flag |
This result is Coyote Racing's best finish so far, and was the first race that was completed without incident or problems. The pit crew, as always, did a fantastic job of getting the bike ready and fueling/checking the bike at each pit stop. The girls on the pit wall kept the riders fully informed of their lap times and any other information they needed. After only three races together the whole team is now one of the "slickest" in the pit lane. The riders would like to thank the whole of our pit crew for their help, without you it would be impossible to get results like this!

We
had visited Snetterton at the end of March to do some testing and to "blow
the winter cobwebs away." The testing had gone well, particularly for
Shelley who had knocked several seconds off her previous best. The plan was
also to test the Pirelli slicks we intended to use this season. But Pirelli
were unable to supply any in time, for the practice or the race, so we would
have to use Michelins, without knowing if they would last the distance.
The team arrived at Snetterton mid-afternoon on Saturday 20 April. This gave
us plenty of time to set up the garage and for the pit crew to practice fuelling
the bike and wheel changes. After a few goes the crew got down to less than
two and a half minutes to change both tyres, this on a bike without any "quick
release" wheel change equipment.
Race day dawned sunny, and it remained that way all day. A summary of the
race is below.

|
| Qualifying | 31 | |
| 1 Hour | 41 | Shaun did the first hour, but after only
ten laps he had to pit, because the brake lever was coming back to the
handle bar and his knee-slider had come off. Then on his second to last lap the bike ran out of fuel, at the far side of the track. These two problems cost the team over 15 places |
| 2 Hours | 37 | Mike's first session and we found that rear tyre wear was very high. The rear tyre needed replacing at the end of this hour. |
| 3 Hours | 35 | Despite having to change the rear tyre, and losing another two minutes, Shelley managed to pull back two places. |
| 4 Hours | 29 | Shaun pulled back six more places. |
| 5 Hours | 25 | Mike pulls back another four places but the rear tyre has worn out again, requiring another extended pit stop to change it. |
| Final Position | 28 | Shelley rides well, on mismatched tyres, to keep us in the top 30, from 49 starters. |
Well yet
again we found out that there is more to endurance racing than just being
able to do good lap times. We ended up using three rear tyres, instead of
the one we had planned. But overall the team were pleased with this result,
bearing in mind we lost about 10 minutes in the pits, which equates to about
10 places.
The riders would
like to thank all the pit crew for their incredible work during the race,
and we hope you will have an easier time of it at Pembrey.
