The races are
6 hours long, except the August round at Snetterton, which is 8 hours. Each
race is an exercise in organisation, co-ordination and teamwork, not just speed
on the track. The riders are
changed and the bike fuelled in pit stops that may see repairs carried out and
tyres being changed.
Two or three riders are allowed in a team as well as pit crew and timekeepers.
Tactical thinking and racecraft
are key as the situation can change from moment to moment. The goal of the teams
is to complete the race, having covered more laps than any other team (or at
least be ahead of any other teams which have completed the same number of laps).
There are four classes which all compete at the same time, for the overall championship
and class championships. So in effect there is 5 races going on at once.
The classes are:
The
race day starts early. There is normally fifteen minutes free practice, followed
by three fifteen minute qualifying sessions. Each rider must go out in qualifying.
The team's position, on the Le-Mans style grid, is determined by the team's
fastest rider's fastest lap, from qualifying.
The race is
started by the drop of a flag. The first riders then have a mad dash across
the track to the 'dead' bikes. The simultaneous thunder of over forty engines
starting, signals that the race is underway.
Team tactics then come into play. Clearly all the bikes must stop to change
rider and re-fuel, most teams choose to do this every hour, because generally
the fuel only lasts an hour. The action then continues like this for the 6 or
8 hours until the chequered flag. At the end of the race there is frequently
only seconds separating the teams.
